The City of Columbia has added a new recycling truck to its fleet through a $297,640 Waste Reduction Grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Division of Solid Waste Management, Materials Management Program. The City provided a 30% local match toward the project, demonstrating its continued commitment to investing in infrastructure and essential public services.

“This grant has allowed us to make an important investment in Columbia’s infrastructure while continuing to provide high-quality services to residents,” said Mayor Chaz Molder. “We appreciate TDEC’s partnership and support in helping us strengthen our recycling program and better serve our community.”

The new truck will increase the Public Works Department’s capacity to collect recyclable materials and support the City’s expanding curbside recycling program.

“This project is a great example of how strategic grant funding can maximize local resources,” said City Manager Tony Massey. “By combining state and local investment, we were able to acquire equipment that will serve our community for years to come.”

Public Works Director Jeff DeWire said the truck will provide valuable operational support and help ensure reliable service for residents.

“Adding this vehicle to our fleet provides greater flexibility in our collection efforts,” said DeWire. “It strengthens our ability to serve residents efficiently and supports the continued success of Columbia’s recycling program.”

The City of Columbia currently offers free curbside recycling collection to all city residents on a biweekly basis. Residents who enroll in the program receive a 96-gallon blue recycling cart, and can place all accepted recyclable materials into a single container without sorting.

The addition of the new recycling truck will help the City continue providing dependable collection services while supporting efforts to reduce waste and encourage responsible recycling practices throughout the community.
