The City of Columbia is warning residents of a scam targeting local residents and businesses.

Scammers are posing as representatives from the City’s Development Services Department and sending fraudulent letters and emails that include official City logos. These letters request payment via wire transfer.

The City reminds residents that it will never request payment through wire transfer, and all legitimate communication from the City will come from an @columbiatn.gov email address.

Below, see examples of the scam communications:

Anyone who receives a suspicious invoice or message claiming to be from the City is encouraged to contact the Development Services Department directly at 931-560-1530 to verify its legitimacy.

The City urges all residents to stay alert and share this information with others.
