Maury County firefighters had a demanding Fourth of July weekend, responding to a series of fires across the area.

On Friday, July 4 at 10:08 p.m., units were dispatched to Shenandoah Drive for a vehicle fire. Investigators determined that discarded fireworks thrown into the bed of a pickup truck sparked the blaze.

In the early hours of Saturday, July 5, crews were kept busy with multiple calls. At 12:26 a.m., Tanker 21 and Chief 20 responded on automatic aid to the City of Columbia for a house fire. Just over two hours later, at 2:46 a.m., firefighters were called to Hoover Gap Road near the Hickman County line for a reported house fire. The homeowners, who had driven to several nearby residences seeking help, reported the fire. A firefighter arrived within minutes to find the house fully engulfed and already collapsed. Crews remained on scene for nearly three hours to bring the situation under control.

At 4:53 a.m., as crews were still engaged at the Hoover Gap Road fire, units were dispatched to I-65 at the 40 mile marker for a box truck on fire. With many local resources tied up, Columbia Fire Department assisted with Truck 3, Tanker 1, and a battalion chief. MCFD’s Tanker 21 also responded from the hydrant fill site. The fire was quickly contained and no injuries were reported.

Later that evening, at 8:23 p.m., MCFD was called to Roy Sellers Road for a reported ATV fire. Engines 21 and 32 and Squad 32 arrived to find an ATV, an SUV, and a section of wooden fence ablaze. The fires were quickly brought under control with no injuries.

Officials are reminding residents to properly dispose of fireworks and exercise caution during holiday celebrations to help prevent similar incidents.
