Annually, “U.S. News and World Report” evaluates more than 4,300 hospitals to provide ratings created to help patients find the best hospitals for 20 specific procedures, conditions and treatments. Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) was rated as high-performing in six areas on this year’s list. More than 2,000 hospitals were found to be high performing for at least one procedure, but only four were rated high in all categories.

MRMC was rated as high-performing in the areas of heart failure treatment, colon cancer surgery, kidney failure treatment, stroke treatment, hip fracture surgery and knee replacement surgery.

“Maury Regional Medical Center’s health care team is committed to ensuring all our patients receive the best possible outcomes,” said Maury Regional Health Interim CEO and Chief Medical Officer Martin Chaney, MD in a press release.

The rankings are based on scores from information obtained from a number of sources including the federal Standard Analytical File, American Hospital Association Annual Survey, Medicare research, patient’s surveys, and for some areas, information obtained directly from hospitals. Ranking categories include patient outcomes, which is more specifically the ability for a hospital to keep patients alive; patient experience; staffing; technology; and expert opinion. Patient outcomes account for 37.5% of the score, patient experience gets %5, 30% goes towards other care related items, and expert opinion weighs 27.5%

Once the hospitals are scored, they are then ranked as high-performing, average, and below average.

U.S. News and World Report reviews hospitals to help readers find the best care when needing special or high-risk care for specific treatments or surgery. The magazine believes that people can make better decisions when they have a full picture of options. Ratings are simply a starting place, the choice of where to have a procedure done is more complicated than a simple ranking. A final decision must be made with the help of the patient’s doctor, the practicality of travel and insurance.

Middle Tennessee is home to one of the top 20 hospitals nationally. That is Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville.
