Mrs. Betty Lou Rogers McClendon, age 74, wife of George Layne McClendon, Sr., and a resident of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday morning, December 18, 2021, just one day shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Sister Inez Jones and Bro. Mark Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Boshers Family Cemetery in Hampshire. A visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on March 18, 1947, in Ardmore, Alabama, Betty was the daughter of the late Eugene Rogers and the late Martha Ruth Abernathy Rogers.

She married George Layne McClendon, Sr. on December 19, 1961, and together they had four children. Betty worked thirty-two years for Headstart, first as a teacher’s aide and later as a school bus driver, and most recently worked sixteen and a half years as a school bus driver for the Maury County Public School System. She enjoyed music and loved to sing. Above all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was a member of Emmanuel Apostolic Church at Hill Town.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Karen (Danny) Wray of Culleoka, son, George “Joe” Layne (Stephanie) McClendon, Jr., son in law, Donny Boshers of Hampshire, brothers, John (Melba) Rogers of Columbia, Ronald (Sonya) Rogers of Columbia, sisters, Barbara Rowland of Columbia, Bonnie (Terry) Lester of Culleoka, brother in law, Jimmy Sanders of Columbia, grandchildren, Tiffany (Thad) Runions, Daniel (Suzanne) Wray, Alexander McClendon, Christopher McClendon, Katie McClendon, Katelyn (Johnny) Emler, Logan McClendon, Brandon McClendon, great-grandchildren, Austin, Kadence, Maybree, Payton, Mia, Ellaina, Zak, Lizzy, Eric, Elizabeth, Oliver, Samuel, Rose, her best friend for forty-five years, Viola (Stanley) Odom, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Sharon Annette Boshers, Steven Ray McClendon, siblings, Andrew Rogers, Dorothy Headden, Virginia Sanders, and Eugene “Bud” Rogers, and brother in law, Jimmie Rowland.

Pallbearers will be Logan McClendon, Jeff Wright, Daniel Wray, Thad Runions, Donny Boshers, and Keith Logue. Honorary pallbearers will include Alexander McClendon, Christopher McClendon, and the Maury County Pupil Transportation drivers and staff.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Marka Gannis and the nurses and staff of Hospice Compassus for their care and compassion for Betty during the difficult time.
