On December 30, 2024, in the warm embrace of his family and home in Columbia, Tennessee, Franklin Dale Nitterauer peacefully departed this world. Born on a summer’s day, June 20, 1942, in the vibrant city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Franklin was the cherished son of Frank Glenn Nitterauer and Stella Mae Grimm Nitterauer.
Franklin’s life was a tapestry of love, adventure, and heartfelt devotion. The threads of his story were first woven when a dear friend arranged a blind date that would forever alter the course of his destiny. There, under the soft glow of possibility, he met Peggy Wisdom—the woman who would become his anchor, his compass, and his lifelong love. Their bond was sealed on September 1, 1963, beginning a partnership that would span decades and traverse countless landscapes.
Together, Franklin and Peggy built a family and a life defined by love and resilience. Both felt the profound call to serve their country, and with steadfast hearts, they joined the U.S. Army. Even with three little ones in tow, their unwavering support for one another never faltered, a testament to the depth of their connection.
Franklin’s demeanor may have appeared rugged at first glance, but those fortunate enough to know him discovered a tender soul beneath the surface. Peggy lovingly described him as a “Moon Pie”—tough on the outside but irresistibly soft and sweet within. His kindness and warmth drew people to him, whether he was sharing stories around a campfire or lending a helping hand to a stranger.
Nature was his sanctuary. The pull of the outdoors was something Franklin could never resist. He found joy in the crisp air of a deer hunt, the still waters of a fishing trip, and the simple beauty of a star-filled sky while camping. To him, these moments were whispers from the heavens, reminding him of the divine artistry of life.
Though he reveled in the serenity of the wilderness, Franklin’s greatest joy was his family. His heart swelled with pride for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each of whom he cherished as a unique gift. He was their steadfast protector, their gentle guide, and their greatest champion.
Franklin is survived by his devoted children, Michelle (Gabriel) Perez and William Nitterauer; his beloved grandchildren, Nisha (Alec Garcia) Dalgleish, Matthew Dalgleish, Ashley (Christian) Spencer, Preston (Julie) Nitterauer, and Alisa (Justin) Gonzalez; and his adoring great-grandchildren, J.J., Justin, Levi, Rhett, K.L., Mila, Hazel, Sterling, and Judith. Welcoming him into the eternal embrace of heaven are those he dearly missed: his parents, Frank and Stella; his son, David Nitterauer; his daughter, Holly; his sister, Margaret; and his grandson, Justin.
Franklin Dale Nitterauer’s story is one of love, laughter, and quiet heroism. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and a life lived to the fullest. His journey may have come to an end, but his spirit will forever dance in the memories of those he touched and in the hearts of those he loved.
