Freda Charlene Thompson Hughes, 64, retired Administrative Assistant for the State of Tennessee Department of Safety, died Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at her residence in Columbia.

A graveside service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 P.M. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Andrew Phillips officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.

Born July 13, 1957 in Macon County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Roosevelt Thompson and the late Viola Exelane Summers Thompson. On September 30, 2002, she married Wendell Cain Hughes who preceded her in death on November 27, 2020. She was a 1975 graduate of Westmoreland High School. Mrs. Hughes enjoyed organizing and filing paperwork. She was of Baptist faith.

Survivors include her son, Shaun Michael Browning; sisters, Vickie Elaine (Ronnie Gregory) Johnson of Westmoreland; Sherry Lynn (James) Stephens of Knoxville; Tonya Dawn Beauman of Knoxville; brother, Stanley Dewayne Thompson of Westmoreland; several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Jeremy Browning; and brother, Robbie Franklin Thompson.

Active pallbearers will be family and friends.
