OBITUARY: Herman Ted ‘Pickle’ Allen


Dr. Herman Ted “Pickle” Allen, age 75, of Columbia, TN formerly of Dickson, TN, died peacefully at his home with his family by his side.

He was born in Dickson County, son of the late Norris Wall and Dorothy Phillips Allen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Charlotte Rogers Allen in 2006 and by his brother Ronny Allen and his sister Sue Allen Gaylor.

He was educated in Dickson County schools and was a graduate of Charlotte High School, class of 1965. He attended Austin Peay University and later Tennessee State University where he received his doctorate in education in 1991. His professional career spanned some 38 years in the education field. He began teaching at the elementary level in 1969, later moving to Dickson County High School in 1972, Dickson Junior High in 1988, and Creek Wood High School in 2001, before retiring in 2007. His passion was history and he taught both it and government for many years.

Pickle, as many people knew him by, loved Atlanta Braves Baseball and Jimmy Buffett. He also enjoyed traveling to Hilton Head every summer with his family, and he and his son Caleb, loved visiting and learning about TN state parks.

Dr. Allen is survived by his two children; Rachel Allen Fleming and her husband, Mica of Columbia, TN, his son; Caleb Allen of Columbia, his two grandchildren; Ilya Fleming and Sophie Fleming, his nephew and nieces; Randy Allen, Susan Whitley, Vonda McGill and Kara Gaylor.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, September 9, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. from the chapel of the Taylor Funeral Home. Luanne Mathis Greer will conduct his service. Visitation will be on Friday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. Place of rest will be in the Dickson County Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
