Herman Washington Obit

Herman Washington, affectionately known as Papa Bear or Herm, was born September 25, 1949, in Fairfield, Alabama to Alexander and Emma Washington. He departed this life on May 26, 2025, at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro Tennessee. Herman was the fourteenth child out of sixteen. He was educated in the Fairfield City School System, graduating from Fairfield Industrial High School in 1967.

In 1968, he relocated to Los Angeles, CA and worked for LA County Schools in accounting and bookkeeping. He sold insurance as a licensed insurance agent before accepting a job with General Motors. He retired from General Motors in the early 2000’s.

On December 29, 1978, he married Doris Washington. This union produced two beautiful children. Herman was a very friendly welcoming person. He enjoyed having a good time, cooking, playing cards, traveling, sports and people. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris Washington, mother, Emma Washington, father, Alexander Washington, sisters, Armide Price and Minnie Suttles, and brothers, Charles Washington, Otis Washington, Joseph Washington, and Alfred Washington.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his sisters, Dorothy Bonner and Betty Sellers, brothers, Alexander Washington, Arthur Washington, and Aubrey Washington, children, James Washington, Shavonya Washington, grandchildren, Janisa Washington, James Washington Jr., Shanti Roberts, Chase Tellington, great-grandchild, Jaice Grandberry, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Heritage Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Maury Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. A visitation will also be held on June 7th from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
