Martha Fern Hickman Barron, retired Educator for Maury County Board of Education for thirty plus years and a resident of Columbia, died Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital.

Born November 7, 1937 in Obion County, Tennessee and reared in Protemus, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Lee M. Hickman and the late Zelma Moultrie Hickman.

Mrs. Barron earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee and her Master’s in Education from Middle Tennessee State University. Mrs. Barron taught 1st grade at Baker Elementary for many years and retired from the Maury County Central Office where she was over the Title I reading program.

She volunteered for Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary, was a member of Maury County Retired Teachers Association and an active member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a much beloved wife, mother, grandmama and a friend to many. Her greatest joys in life were her family and church.

Survivors include her husband, whom she married June 5, 1960, William Lee “Jack” Barron of Columbia; children, William Lee Barron, II of Knoxville; Laura Barron (Jim) Neufeldt of Brentwood; Mark Hickman Barron of Manchester; brother, Waymon L. (Helen) Hickman of Columbia; grandchildren, Maegan (Corey) Keller, Zoe Neufeldt (Sam McCarthy), William Mark Barron, Audrey Barron; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 P.M. at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Reverend Chris Caldwell and Revered Mark Barron officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols and Saturday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the church.

Active pallbearers will be William Mark Barron, Corey Keller, Logan Hickman, Bill Hickman, Andy Hickman, David Hickman, and John Hickman. Honorary pallbearers include members of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

The family suggests memorials to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1106 Nashville Highway, Columbia, TN 38401.
