Mr. Michael Thomas Smith, age 73, husband of Donna Murrell Smith, and a resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at his residence.
The family will celebrate his life with services at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on September 6, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee, Michael was the son of the late James Edward Smith and the late Mary Frances Burke Smith. He was drafted into the Major League Baseball Association but instead decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corp. He served during the Vietnam war where he received his Purple Heart. He worked many years in air traffic control for multiple airports and was on duty the day Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane crashed. Michael also coached Little League for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Smith of Columbia, son, Christopher Smith, daughter, Meredith (Guy Tull) Smith, brother, James (Marilyn) Smith, sister, Teresa (Jim) Smith, and grandchildren, Thomas Smith, Kelsey Tull, Hayden Tull, Oliver Tull, and Jaxson Blaustein.
