Mildred Cox Grissim, 97, longtime resident of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Life Care Center of Columbia.

Mildred was born on October 18, 1926 in Castalian Springs, TN to the late George Bell Cox, Sr. and the late Orralee Bentley Cox.

On July 19, 1948 she married Robert Donnell “Bob” Grissim and he preceded her in death on October 20, 2003. She dedicated approximately thirty years of service as a substitute teacher in the Maury County school system and was usually the first choice when teachers needed a substitute. Mildred was a very dedicated sub and had both respect and love from the students she taught.

She was a loving, caring and giving person which was reflected in her daily life and had a love for helping people. Mildred was a devout Christian of the Baptist faith and attended First Baptist Church for many years and then moved her membership to West End Baptist Church where she was a charter member. She was very active in all church activities including Sunday school and Bible School. She will forever be missed!

Survivors include her daughter and son in law, Jane and Rick Craft of Columbia; two grandchildren, Robert William “Will” Craft (Tara) of Mt. Pleasant and Kellee Laine Craft of Waukesha, Wisconsin; three great grandchildren, Tessa Craft, Hank Craft and Enzo van Niekerk.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother George B. Cox, Jr.

A private graveside service will be conducted on Monday, August 26, 2024 at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Rick Elsey officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday, August 25, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home.
