OBITUARY: Olivia ‘Libby’ McClain Benderman

Olivia (Libby) McClain Benderman, 90, retired public school teacher and resident of Mack Benderman Road, passed peacefully Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at home.

A Maury County native, Libby was born on October 15, 1932, the daughter of Raymond McClain and Eloise York McClain in Mt. Joy Tennessee, where she went to elementary school and attended the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

A 1950 graduate of Hay Long High School, she married Joe Mack Benderman in 1954. They were married for 49 years and had 5 children: Susan, John, Randy, Mack, and Mark.

Libby earned her bachelor’s degree in education and later her master’s from MTSU. She taught at Riverside and Whitthorne in Columbia for 22 years. Libby was a longtime member of First United Methodist in Mt. Pleasant, where she sang in the choir. She also volunteered with the Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

Libby was preceded in death by her husband Joe Mack Benderman, her sisters Betty Lee and Bobbye Chappell, and her brother Doug McClain.

Survivors include her children, Susan Benderman, John (Brenda) Benderman, Randy Benderman, Mack Benderman, and Mark (Beth) Benderman, and her granddaughter Jill (Travis) Quillen.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy McClain, David Johnson, Kenny Benderman, Jane Alexander, Dolly Attkisson, Richard Callahan, members of First United Methodist, and her caregivers from Avalon Hospice.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church (202 South Main St., Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474) and Mt. Joy Cumberland Presbyterian Church (8354 Mt. Joy Road, Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474).

The family received friends on Sunday, December 18 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. The service for Libby will be Monday, December 19 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Randy Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
