Peggy Ruth Mathis Smith, a resident of Columbia, Tn, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the age of 86. She was born on November 1, 1938 in the Gordonsburg Community of Lewis County. She was the daughter of John Ellis Mathis and Mary Ruth Yokley Mathis. She was of the Christian faith and attended Mt. Joy Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
After retiring from General Electric she enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports and many other activities. She and her husband Norris also enjoyed time at their camp on the Tennessee River. They also enjoyed getting dressed up and spending evenings with Square Dancing with the Wagon Wheelers.
She was preceded in death by her husband David Norris Smith. She had five brothers: John Ellis Mathis, Jr., Bobby Mathis, Billy Mathis, Douglas Mathis and Larry Mathis, and three sisters: Jean Whitwell, Anne Taylor, and Barbara Tutt.
She is survived by a sister, Sandra Kay (Steve) Brower, a special niece Carol Sue Mathis Burns, 2 step-daughters: Elizabeth Sowell and Sarah Hall, 6 grandchildren: Rebecca (David) Gibbs, John (Ciara) Sowell, Jack (Jessica) Sowell, Fagan (Matt) Moritz, Andrew (Brittany) Legg, and Laura (Lucas) Hale, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 31 from 11:00-1:00 with the funeral following. Burial will be at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mark King officiating. Pallbearers are John Sowell, Jack Sowell, Williams Tutt Jr., Jamie Mathis, George Whitwell Jr., Nathan Burns, Ben Burns and Matthew Burns.
