OBITUARY: Ronald Eugene Coffman

298

Ronald Eugene Coffman, age 70, passed away on March 18, 2026. He was born on August 9, 1955, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Donald G. Coffman and Nonna Elizabeth Harris Coffman.

Ron was truly a “jack of all trades,” known for his ability to fix, build, or understand just about anything he put his hands on. Over the years, he worked on forklifts and computers, served as a locksmith, and worked for General Motors. No matter the task, he approached it with skill, curiosity, and determination.

He had a deep passion for amateur ham radio and held an Extra Class license, the highest level in the field. He faithfully rose early each morning to lead a Bible study over the radio before the daily check-in, sharing his faith and encouraging others. Ron was also known as a storm chaser, metal detecting enthusiast, and train lover—always eager for the next adventure or discovery.

Music was an important part of Ron’s life. He could play the guitar, banjo, or nearly any instrument he picked up. Alongside his wife, Shirley, he was a member of the band God’s Image. He especially loved bluegrass and gospel music.

Ron never met a stranger and will be remembered for his kindness, easygoing nature, and the way he made others feel welcome. He was a devoted member of Garrett Baptist Church and lived out his faith daily.

Above all, he was a proud “Papaw” who deeply loved his children and grandchildren. His family meant everything to him, and he treasured every moment spent with them.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, June Gaw, and his grandchild, Branton Sharp.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Shirley Hinson Coffman; children, Alicia Sharp (Punkin) and Eric Lovett (Meredith Williams); sisters, Missy Bearden, Sonya Williams, and Christi Stutts; grandchildren, Brooklyn Sipes, Bria Trull, Brana Sharp, Tyler Tohn, Braci Sharp, Madison Sharp, Katelyn Skelton, Hallie Barnes, and Allison Lovett; seven great-grandchildren; a daughter of the heart, Crystal Jones; grandchildren of the heart, Malicaih Bruce and Julian Jones; one great-grandchild of the heart; and his extra special furry baby, Chip.

Visitation with Ron’s family will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at McDonald Funeral Home, with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Garrett Baptist Church Cemetery.

McDonald Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Coffman family.
