A subcontractor was seriously injured Thursday morning after falling about 20 feet into an underground concrete tank at Santa Fe Unit School, prompting a technical rescue by the Maury County Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched to the school on Santa Fe Pike at 9:24 a.m. for a report of an injured person. When crews arrived, they learned the worker had fallen into a newly installed underground tank that is part of the school’s septic system project.
The incident was upgraded to a technical rescue, bringing in additional rope rescue personnel and specialized equipment. Two Maury County firefighters and a Maury Regional EMS paramedic entered the concrete vault to provide medical care while crews set up ventilation and monitored air quality.
Using the department’s ladder truck as a high anchor point, rescuers lowered a Stokes basket into the tank, secured the patient and safely lifted the worker to the surface.
The worker was transferred to Maury Regional EMS and Vanderbilt LifeFlight before being airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The Maury County Fire Department also thanked Columbia Power and Water for quickly responding to shut down nearby overhead power lines so rescue crews could safely operate the aerial ladder truck.
