On Thursday around 3:30 p.m., Columbia Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a school bus on fire near Nashville Highway and Old Highway 31. The bus was carrying 11 young children at the time of the incident.
When crews arrived, they found that all children had already been safely evacuated and accounted for by the bus driver and their assistant. Using the bus’s onboard fire extinguisher, the assistant was able to quickly put out the fire, preventing further damage and ensuring the children’s safety.
In addition to the swift action by the Maury County Board of Education employees, two residents of the nearby City Limits Apartments—stepped in to help. They assisted the driver in keeping the children calm, safe, and together until emergency personnel arrived.
