OBITUARY: William Thomas Haywood Jr.

Mr. William Thomas Haywood, Jr., 93, a resident of Columbia, died Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care.

Funeral services for Mr. Haywood will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Father Chris Bowhay officiating. Inurnment will follow in Knob Creek Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin Post 19. The family will visit with friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Born May 25, 1928 in Maury County, he was the son of the late William Thomas Haywood, Sr., and the late Frances Virginia Stone Haywood.

Mr. Haywood was a member of the United States Navy and served in WWII. Following active duty, Mr. Haywood attended college at the University of Mississippi. He received a business degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and spent his career as a university manager and chief financial and executive officer at several institutions of higher education, including Tulane, Mercer University, Skidmore College, retiring from Vanderbilt University. Having retired to his hometown of Columbia, he co-founded the Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society. He conceived, organized, and directed the preservation of historical county records, which resulted in the establishment of the Maury County Archives. He will be receiving the Padgett-Haywood Award posthumously on Sunday, November 21, 2021 from the Maury County Historical Society. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his children, William Thomas Haywood III of Peachtree City, Georgia; Sylvia Annette Haywood-Carter of Santa Monica, California; Robert Alton Haywood of Atlanta, Georgia; and Susan Haywood (David) Tobelman of Mint Hill, North Carolina; grandchildren, John Thomas Haywood, William Henry Haywood, Ethan Hortan, Sherod Graham Oppy, David Austin Tobelman, Dylan Elise Haywood, Solon Gabriel Carter, and Anna Rose Carter; great-grandchildren, Rain Haywood, Kyla Haywood, and Zoe Haywood; sisters, Helen Sue (Fred) Hahn of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and Frances Anne Ramsey of Tupelo, Mississippi; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Stone Haywood, Charles Edward Haywood, and son-in-law, Kenneth Carter.
