The City of Columbia, in partnership with the Columbia Arts Council, completed phase two of a public art project that has transformed plain City utility boxes into beautiful art using images provided by local photographers. Vinyl wraps of those images were created and professionally installed by local sign company Vinyl Flag Signs and Graphics.
Five signalization utility boxes were selected for phase two of this public art project located along North Garden Street at the intersections of 8th, 6th, 5th, 4th, and North James Campbell. The photos were processed into large format vinyl and wrapped around the entire utility box so the images are easily seen from the sidewalk and the street. Photos were selected from submissions by local photographers via Facebook. The winning photos were submitted by Laurie Montgomery, Dr. John Cassone, Sarah Gilliam, and Carl Jones.
There’s so much about this project that I love,” said Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder. “First, it represents our commitment to the arts. Second, it places the spotlight on local artists. Third, it incorporates art in unusual places and shows that art truly comes in all shapes and sizes. Finally, it results from such popular public feedback during the initial phase, we listened to that feedback and implemented an otherwise unplanned phase two. Community input at its best.”
This public art project is designed to help beautify Columbia’s downtown corridor.
