The City of Columbia is pleased to announce a collaborative partnership with the Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club on an improvement project of the Riverwalk Park basketball court. The City Parks and Recreation Department partnered with the Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club, who donated over $18,000 to renovate the regulation-size basketball court and install new courtside park benches at Riverwalk Park. The project will be completed in November 2022.
Columbia Breakfast Rotary President Denny Beaver stated, “The basketball court is always busy and is a great amenity to Riverwalk Park. Our Community Fund Committee saw the need for this improvement project. We are pleased to be able to provide the funds towards this project and collaborate with the City of Columbia, especially the Parks and Recreation Department.”
The Riverwalk Park basketball court improvement project will consist of many renovation needs. The project consists of re-painting the court surface with a blue athletic court acrylic surface paint. The Rotary International logo will be placed in the center court circle in gold, along with the game lines. Two new courtside park benches were also purchased by Columbia Breakfast Rotary and installed by Columbia Parks and Recreation. Also, Columbia Parks and Recreation removed the former basketball goals and installed goose-neck-style backboard goals outside of the laying court. The Riverwalk Park basketball court is located five blocks from the Columbia Downtown Square and is easily accessible to the Columbia community. It is also available for use general public year-round.
Beaver also added, “We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year. The Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club has provided several amenities to Riverwalk Park; a splash pad, Rotary Pavilion, exercise pad, and a 25’ flag pole. Since its inception, in 1997, the Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club maintained a history of making significant financial contributions internationally and locally with a financial impact of over $580,000.”
Mayor Chaz Molder stated, “I am so grateful for the Columbia Breakfast Rotary Club. They are like the gift that keeps on giving to our community. No matter the project, no matter the task, and no matter the cause, they are always there for the City of Columbia. Their latest contribution is significant and will be for years to come. Their ongoing contributions to our community have made Columbia a better place.”
