Bonnie May Runions Obit

Bonnie May Runions, 71, of Hohenwald, TN, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on September 4, 1953, in Clinchco, VA, to the late John and Bertha Puckett. Bonnie grew up as a coal miner’s daughter, a fact she was always proud of, and carried that same hardworking spirit throughout her life.

On May 22, 1976, just one day after Dan’s discharge from the Marines, Bonnie married Dan Runions, marking the start of a nearly 50-year journey filled with love and partnership. Bonnie was truly Dan’s right hand. Whether it was helping to change tractor oil, building, and staining cabinets, or mowing the yard and trimming around trees, she was always by his side. She devoted herself fully to her family, always putting their needs first and ensuring their home was full of love and care.

Bonnie had a passion for cooking, a skill she shared with many throughout her life. She worked as a cook in the school system and later as a hospital cook before retiring. Her meals comforted many, and her talent in the kitchen was a source of pride.

Her love story with Dan began when he was serving in the Marines. One day, Dan and a friend skipped PT and went to the PX in Quantico, VA, where Bonnie was working. She sold him a watch, but he walked away with more than that—he found the love of his life.

Bonnie’s devotion to her family was unmatched. Even while sick and hospitalized, her concern was always for Dan and her family. She insisted on getting up to make sure breakfast was ready for her husband, often saying, “I have to get up and help him-that’s what I’m supposed to do.” Her selflessness and love for her family were evident in everything she did.

Bonnie and Dan were members of the Springer Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son Wesley R. Runions, 7 siblings Gay Moats, Freddie (Betty) Puckett, Walter Gray (Annabelle) Puckett, Glenda Gaby, Sally (Edmond) Stanley, Lois Ludowici and Baby Girl Puckett, nephew Johnny Stanley and niece Erin Ruth Breedlove.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 48 years Dan Runions, daughter Julie (Runions) Hensley, siblings Roger & Diane Puckett, Johnnie Belinda & Clinton Thompson, Peggy & Charles Brooks, Joseph Puckett, Arlene Puckett, special friends Georgie Gus, Becky & Dean Woods, Pamela Puckett and Pat Griffith, granddaughter Hannah Hensley with boyfriend Jarrod Hinson, Jacob Hensley with girlfriend Samantha Hobbs, Andrew Runions with girlfriend Caleigh Smith and Daisy Runions with boyfriend Cale Staggs, 2 great-grandchildren Greyson Capps and Wesley Staggs and the star of the family her beloved “Moose” the Yorkie puppy.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 24 beginning at 11:00 AM in the Springer Cemetery.

McDonald Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Runions family.
