Jack Jeff Cates, age 96, a resident of Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Mt. Pleasant Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born on January 15, 1928, in Lawrence County, Jeff was the son of the late Lucious Ollie Cates and the late Rosie Elizabeth Fralix Cates.
He devoted many years to farming before transitioning to a successful career as a self-contractor specializing in sheet rock. Later in life, he answered a spiritual calling, becoming a respected preacher and evangelist. His last congregation was at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ethridge, and he was currently a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of God. Known for his passion for praying for others and his inspiring testimonies, Jeff also possessed a talent for cooking and took pleasure in tending to his flowers.
He is survived by his daughters, Judy (Hugh) Dickey of Mt. Pleasant, Patricia (BJ) Roberson of Spring Hill, Deborah (Billy) Tinsley of Spring Hill, daughter in law, Laura Cates of Columbia, brother, Bobby Cates, and sisters, Alice Golden, Roxie Fralix, Shirley (Douglas) Graham, Linda Taylor, eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Cates, son, Jeffrey Cates, grandson, Gregory Dickey, and siblings, Glen Cates, L.O. Cates, Gethel Russell, Becky Smith, and Eunie Adams.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Jerry Golden, Douglas & Shirley Graham officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in Lynnwood Cemetery in Lynnville, Tennessee. A visitation was also held on Sunday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
