Sherrill-Bruce-McKennon

Sherrill Bruce McKennon left his earthly home on June 23, 2023, at the age of 66, with his cherished family by his side.

Bruce was the youngest of 7 children born to Mack and Jeanie McKennon. He was a 1976 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School where he was a proud member of the MPHS Band, playing the trumpet and tuba.

He and his siblings inherited a love for hunting from their parents and had great memories of fishing from sunup to sundown. He would continue his love for fishing at his favorite camping spot at NACO, his home away from home.

Bruce loved all sports and was a very competitive person. His youth was spent on the baseball and softball fields of his hometown. He passed his love of these sports to his children and truly loved watching them play. He was also an experienced poker player and participated in Texas Hold ‘Em Games and Tournaments at many places as far as away as Las Vegas. His favorite games would be the weekly family game night at home.

Bruce worked at Union Carbide in Columbia until it closed and later retired as a truck driver for Tennessee Aluminum.

He was a dedicated fan of all things U.T. and a diehard VOLS football fan. He also cheered on the Tennessee Titans and attended many games of both his beloved teams.

Bruce’s most recent dream came true when he walked on the home field of the Atlanta Braves as a guest of Lane Thomas, the right fielder of the visiting team, the Washington Nationals. Bruce’s family are forever grateful to Lane and his family for making his dream come true.

Bruce was a member of the Freedom Church of Christ where his final services will be held.

Bruce was an avid supporter of the MP youth sports. He served as Coach and President of the MP City Girls Softball League, President and Coach of MP City Babe Ruth and Board Member of the MP Athletic Field House. He was former President of the Sandy Hook Area Community Center, located in the community he lived in.

He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Bruce is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Nikki Hendrix McKennon. He will leave memories with his cherished children: Stacia (Justin) Buckner of Ashland City, Tennessee, Jerico (Helen) McKennon of New Braunfels, Texas, Justin McKennon of Nashville, Tennessee and Chosen Daughter, Sherry Attichison of Mobile, AL; grandchildren: Kristen McKennon, Jealyn McKennon, Elizabeth “Bug” Carpenter, Aaliyah McKennon, Jesse McKennon, and Kennedy McKennon; sister: Joyce “Cissy” Caruk; brother: Douglas McKennon; and along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Carmack (Bill) Cothran and Dolly (Sherrill) Green; brothers: Jimmy (Tom) McKennon and Bobby (Peggy) Gene McKennon; and infant daughter: Jessica Ann McKennon.

His fur baby Nacho was the first to greet him with a wagging tail and lots of kisses.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 26, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. The Service for Bruce will be Tuesday, June 27, at 2:00 PM at Freedom Church of Christ with David Kersey and Jeff Smith officiating.
